Dr. Ali Ahmad – Intraoperative Cs-131 Brachytherapy for Brain Tumors
Name: Dr. Ali Ahmad
Title: Intraoperative Cs-131 (GammaTile) for Intracranial Tumors – Systematic Review & Analysis
Affiliation: Foundation Year 1 (FY1) Intern / Junior Doctor, King Hussein Medical Center
Country: Jordan
Introduction
Intracranial tumors remain a major challenge in neurosurgical practice, with recurrence rates and postoperative management often determining long-term patient outcomes. Intraoperative Cs-131 brachytherapy (GammaTile) introduces an innovative approach by delivering continuous, localized radiation directly into the surgical cavity immediately after tumor resection.
This systematic review and analysis evaluates the safety, effectiveness, and clinical advantages of GammaTile across multiple tumor categories, including gliomas, meningiomas, and metastatic intracranial lesions.
About Dr. Ali Ahmad
Dr. Ali Ahmad is a 23-year-old Jordanian physician currently serving his Foundation Year 1 (FY1) internship at King Hussein Medical Center. He graduated in May 2025, developing a strong foundation in scientific research during medical school. His interest soon evolved into an academic and professional commitment toward neurosurgery.
A key turning point was a clinical neurosurgical attachment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the United Kingdom in March 2025, which confirmed his goal of pursuing neurosurgery as a lifelong career. He is currently preparing for the MRCS examinations alongside his clinical training, aiming to secure a neurosurgery residency in the United Kingdom.

Key Benefits of GammaTile Cs-131 Brachytherapy
1. Immediate Post-Resection Radiation
Treatment begins intraoperatively, minimizing delays and enabling early control of residual tumor tissue.
2. Improved Local Tumor Control
Evidence suggests a meaningful reduction in postoperative recurrence rates.
3. Protection of Healthy Brain Tissue
Localized radiation allows better preservation of surrounding neural structures, supporting improved recovery and neurological function.
4. Single-Procedure Efficiency
GammaTile placement during surgery eliminates the need for immediate follow-up radiotherapy scheduling.
5. Wide Clinical Applicability
Research supports its effectiveness in:
Primary brain tumors
Recurrent lesions
Metastatic intracranial tumors
High-risk surgical cases
Conclusion
GammaTile Cs-131 brachytherapy represents a significant evolution in neuro-oncological treatment, combining precise surgical excision with targeted radiation in a single operative session. As clinical evidence expands, this approach is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool in improving patient care, local tumor control, and long-term quality of life.
We look forward to welcoming participants from around the world to join us at the upcoming neurosurgery conference, where innovations like GammaTile will be showcased and discussed among leading experts in the field.
